My Introduction to Iridology

When I first learned about iridology nearly 40 years ago, I was just getting into herbs and nutrition on a personal level. As a devout Christian, I moved pretty slowly and cautiously, aware that there was some (a lot) of ‘stuff’ out there in the ‘natural world’ that I didn’t want to get involved with.

My Bernard Jensen Roots

Iridology was one of those things. It took me quite a while to decide to dip my toe in. (That might be where you are now.) My first introduction to iridology was from a person who had studied with Dr Bernard Jensen, arguably the greatest North American iridologist of the 20th century. My teacher taught me there were only two genetic iris colors – blue and brown. Anything in between showed toxins that needed to be cleansed out, and when the toxins were cleansed out the eyes would be a more pure color. I also learned that certain markings called ‘lesions’ showed where there were problems that needed to be ‘healed’. Again, when the appropriate work was done, the ‘lesions’ would disappear. I studied at length with this teacher and started practicing in my own holistic wellness office. Soon thereafter I certified as an iridologist.

After practicing this style of iridology for over 10 years, I was very unhappy. I had decided to give up on iridology. It just didn’t work. I would put people with hazel eyes on cleanses because their eyes were neither blue nor brown so they obviously needed cleansing – and their eyes wouldn’t change one iota. I’d put people on support programs to get rid of lesions because there were obviously weak areas that needed healing and again, nothing would happen. I was frustrated, discouraged, and tired of being wrong.

My Intro to Constitutional Iridology

NIRA-VHS-tapes

It was then, in 1992, that I crossed paths with a different style of iridology – Constitutional Iridology – and a couple of names, Bill Caradonna and Harri Wolf, who were the founders of the National Iridology Research Association (NIRA). I purchased some VHS videos from them (dating myself, I know, LOL) and started studying. What they taught about iridology made such sense. (You know, after all these years there is still a lot of misinformation out there – and it’s that misinformation that gives iridologists a bad name!) I started using what I learned from the videotapes, brought Bill up to Canada to teach a couple of times, and certified yet one more time – but this time was different. What I saw in eyes actually made sense! Assessing irides in this way suddenly made it easier to create nutrition programs. It was also easier to find the root of my clients’ problems – which made it easier to work deeper and get better results

Now, as an IIPA (the modern iteration of NIRA) Certified Comprehensive Iridology Instructor, my passion is to share, with eager students and practitioners, the most current iridology practices and how to integrate them into a holistic practice. I really do want wellness practitioners to have the most up-to-date, correct information.
