What the Pupils Add to an Iris Assessment

Let’s talk about what information the pupils can add to an iris assessment.

Maybe you’ve seen TV shows about emergency rooms where a patient is rushed in unconscious on a gurney. The triage nurse props the person’s eyes open, flicks a light across them and announces ‘pupils are fixed and dilated’ suggesting a traumatic brain injury or a stroke.

As holistic health professionals, the pupils give us even more information. You already know the pupils respond to light. Bright light constricts pupils and dim light dilates them. BUT there are other reasons for constricted and dilated pupils.

Constriction is a parasympathetic response and can suggest the person is in a very relaxed state and feels safe, or if the pupils are very tiny, known as pinpoint pupils, the client may have narcotics in his system. The parasympathetic state places very little extra nutritional demands on the body and allows the adrenal glands time to recharge.

Dilation is a sympathetic response which suggests the person is on guard, in the fight or flight state, and does not feel safe which may be draining specific nervous system nutrients like B vitamins, Vitamin C, Calcium, and Magnesium, as well as heightening demands on the adrenal glands.

Extreme dilation can also be caused by medications such as tricyclic antidepressants, atropine, and sympathomimetics like dopamine, albuterol, cocaine, and amphetamines to name a few. Here’s one exception - young children often have very large pupils.

When we layer pupil size up with other iris markers, we can get a good idea of how intensely the client responds to stress, how much of the stress response was learned in utero, and the best ways to support the client now to help his body respond more appropriately when faced with stress.

Let’s add to this.

Pupils are almost never completely round. Where we see flattenings gives us clues as to where longstanding spinal misalignments are. It also adds a layer of information about which organs may be struggling because of the nervous system impingements a misaligned spine can create.

Observing where the flattening is and which organs it correlates to adds another helpful layer of information to an iris assessment.

No one iris indicator ever tells the whole story. When we take family health history, personal health history and lifestyle and diet into account and then assess the irides, we get a much deeper insight into root causes of imbalances and the best recommendations to make.
